Kanken

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 5:34 PM
I'm reading this book about how to pass Kanken Level 2. In the required material section, I found it weird it recommend a kanji dictionary when it already recommended the e-dictionary w/koujien included. It explains you don't need it for 2kyuu, but... 準一級の漢字は広辞苑を調べても出てこないものが多いので、もうこちらに手を出すしかなくなります.

Holy crap, Pre-1 has that much vocabulary that doesn't show up in the OED of Japanese? That's one hell of a hardcore test.

Kanken Pre 2

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
I'm pretty sure I failed today. But now I know my level and am pretty sure that I can pass Level 2 in a few months if I study seriously starting now(as in a few hours every single day).

Kanken 3 is already a big accomplishment for a foreigner, but I prefer to compare myself to the natives. I see level 2 as the standard for well-educated native Japanese, so I WILL pass it next time.

Rolo's Phone strap

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 11:15 PM
Hi everyone,
I was wondering where I can get Rolo's phone strap. I was sure that they sell it and searched but couldn't find anything. Then I saw a photo of one so now I'm even more convinced that there must exist such a merchandise item. But I didn't find anything on ebay or yesasia.com
Any ideas???

Pride, Prejudice, and ZOMBIES!

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 3:04 AM
So I've been on a reading kick lately, and I fiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnallly finished Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, after having it for...two and a half months? I got it while David was here in August... anyway! I don't know why it took so long to finish it, I like it just fine, and the concept just rocked my socks, since P&P is my favorite book, and I love the zombies. I guess because it was just P&P with new zombiebits added in, it took off the urgency to finish.

Anyway, despite the promising premise, I gotta admit, I was kind of disappointed.

Jane Austen, now with ball jokes )

Maybe I'm being too harsh, since it is what it set out to be: an "expanded edition", but ultimately it left me with the impression of a lazy author. Like, this guy got a really good idea for a book, but didn't want to write it all himself, so he just edited the original Pride and Prejudice. I think it would have been a lot better if he'd re-written it all from scratch. Kind of a waste ^^;

A proper knight should practice mercy toward his enemies, which is harder than it sounds.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this screen cap:

No matter what I do, because it's so low quality, I can't seem to lighten it up & make it look somewhat decent. Any idea how I can do this without loosing all the detail & without everything blending in?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Can't seem to find any tags to put this with.. so I think this one works, sorry!

Also, I use Photoshop CS3

Animation is too slow

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 7:51 PM
I'm planning on making an icon using a screencap, which can be found below the cut. You may notice that the animation is very slow. I use VirtualDub, CamStudio, and ImageReady. It's speed is fine when played in vDub, but when opened in ImageReady it's deathly slow, and I can't seem to understand why.

Any ideas on what I can do so the speed isn't like that? I screencap at 40 frames per second, and the time between each frame in ImageReady is set to 0sec. I've tried many things, and I have a headache from all this D:

Any help is very very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Solved! Thank you all so much (:

Squenix acquired Taito much later than Quest. I guess this means the Ogre Battle series is dead.

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Hey everyone (: I really don't know how to make an animation with screencaps. I want to make a mini-movie icon.
Every tutorial I can find is for Photoshop or something else, but I'm using Gimp.

Does anyone know a tutorial for that?

I'm glad about every help!
I bought the Street Fighter 20 Anniversary Artwork Collection. In the back, there's some artwork by Udon.

And holy crap, the little artwork of Udon in the back of the tome is better than everything else in it! It feels like I wasted my money buying this official SF artwork collection, shoulda bought Udon's Capcom artwork collection instead.

Recreating this effect?

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
I love this effect and I was wondering if it would be possible to recreate it for a batch of icons I'm planning on making?

Thanks in advance
I'm using Photoshop [Photoshop 7 or cs4, I have both on seperate computers]
